According to the Green Building Council of Canada (
CaGBC) buildings in Canada use nearly one-third of our total energy, two-thirds
of our electricity, and one-eighth of our water. How buildings are designed, built, and operated has, therefore, a fundamental
impact on the health of people, communities, and the planet.
The LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification
program is a voluntary, consensus-based, market driven rating system administered by the Green Building Council (CaGBC in Canada,
and USGBC in the United States). To qualify for LEED® Certification, building or improvement projects must meet or exceed specific,
measureable, performance targets within six key environmental categories including: 1) Sustainable Sites;
2) Water Efficiency; 3) Energy and Atmosphere; 4) Materials and Resources (Reduction of Waste to Landfill); 5) Indoor
Environmental Quality; and 6) Innovation and Design.
According to the Green Building Council of Canada, the owners and
occupants of green buildings benefit from lower operating costs and better asset values; healthy more productive indoor environments with better
air quality and lighting; improved energy and water efficiency; and reduced waste to landfill.
Green Buildings in Toronto
There are now over 61 LEED® registered projects in the Greater Toronto Area.
An excellent example
is the
Toronto Botanical Gardens.
Notable features according to the
CaGBC:
Optimizing energy cost performance to be 26% better than the Model National Energy Code
for Buildings, with energy consumption savings of 30% over the baseline, using a weighted average between the new addition and renovated
building, with: heat recovery, argon-filled double glazed low-e glazing, improved thermal envelope and energy efficient lighting;
Providing Best Practices Commissioning to ensure a well functioning building;
Use of a rainwater cistern for irrigation as well as
reducing indoor potable water use by 26% by incorporating low flow fixtures;
Creating a green roof to reduce the heat island effect,
as well surpassing the requirements for reduction of this effect in non-roof areas by increased use of reflective and emissive materials;
Achieving 100% daylighting, as well as providing overall a good indoor environmental quality for your staff

About LEED® Certification
Ceiling Doctor and Green Buildings
Ceiling Doctor service can help any improvement project to maximize its LEED®points, and to meet EPA, Environment Canada, and City of Toronto standards for green buildings in the following categories:
Ceiling
Doctor's exclusive process is also excellent for the ongoing maintenance of healthy indoor environments, and for the reduction of
waste to landfill for any facilities manager needing to improve the performance of their buildings in these
LEED®, EPA, Environment Canada, and City of Toronto green building categories.
Please note that green performance
categories from the LEED® program, EPA, Environment Canada, and City of Toronto were selected because of the credibility
of these organizations, and to help with a possible application for LEED® Certification, and that Ceiling Doctor does not, directly
or indirectly, imply any approval, association, sponsorship, endorsement, or affiliation with LEED®, the EPA, Environment Canada,
or The City of Toronto.
Reduction of waste to landfill
Ceiling Doctor cleaning and restoration service, as an alternative to replacement, completely
eliminates or dramatically reduces the volume of used ceiling tiles, t-bars, wall partitions, and carpets sent to landfill. Cleaning
and restoring these materials in place is also much more energy efficient than recycling them.
Healthy indoor environments
Ceiling
Doctor service for ceilings, walls, and carpets improves building occupant health, comfort, and productivity by:
-
Removing
sources of indoor air pollution, such as dust, dust mites, and mould.
-
Removing drywall dust, concrete dust, saw dust, and other particulates
after construction, renovations, or repairs.
-
Minimizing the use of new building materials which may produce harmful emissions.
-
Renewing
the light reflectance of acoustic ceilings.
